What’s better than when roles start reversing—when real life inspires runway trends (not the other way round), recreated to fit couture standards. Summer of 2016 saw beauty in a whole new light. Usually, backstage is all about striving for perfection—getting that sculpted cheek or defined eye. But this season, the looks were deliberately kept imperfect, undone, messed up; it was a dark but alluring manifestation of beauty in chaos.

Besides, it gave real girls a breather—almost to say, hey, it’s okay to mess up! And you know what else is okay to try this season? These ruffled, undone, hair and make-up looks:

Smudgy eyeshadow

It’s like a smoky eye, only more playful, and less precise. Take your time, choose your colours, and have fun dusting your lids with them, not worrying about any clear cut lines. Blend it just till your crease or let it spill over, so long as you keep reducing the quantity of colour on your brush as you go further.

Clumpy mascara

Yup, you can be like Twiggy too, and no one can tell you those lashes aren’t perfect, because clumps are now a thing. Perfect, separated fringes are giving way to bold spidery lashes—we know every girl is wishing this trend never goes out of style.

Undone hair

Hairdos that you probably just left half-done and forgot, loose flyaways doing their thing—basically done-in-a-hurry hair that you don’t even need a mirror for is what you need to perfect this season. Too good to be true?

Casual top knots—unstructured but full of texture—are going to make public appearance and not just as your I’m-knee-deep-in-work updo. A hairstyle that’s basically strands twisted up and tied, without a second thought (or look) is one we can get on board.

Last-minute lipstick

Stained lips, with colour gently dabbed across with your fingers to give it a natural colour is what will give your pucker that moody effect. Like you’ve worn out your lipstick at the end of a really good day, there’s just enough to tell a story.
