Think oiling your hair is great for hair growth? Don’t know how to take your hair from regular to celebrity-level gloss? Five celebrity hairstylists reveal the secrets your salon won’t let you in on.
Boost your conditioner
“Add a little argan oil to your conditioner. And before you apply the mix, always towel-dry the hair. This makes all the difference.” – Natasha Naegamvala
Stop oiling your hair
“You may have heard many times from parents and grandparents that oiling is a great way to keep your hair healthy. But, in fact, over time, it does the opposite, coating it with a fine layer of oil. This layer acts to magnify the heat to your hair, sucking out all the internal moisture of your hair. It may look shiny because it’s got a layer of oil but it will feel rough and dehydrated. Condition instead of oiling. There is a myth that conditioner makes your hair fall out when, in fact, you lose 100-150 hair strands per day regardless, as this is the way our body is made. Ninety per cent of your hair is alive and 10 per cent is shedding and will regrow.” – Rod Anker
Get that trim
“Trim your hair every six to eight weeks. That’s the best way to keep it healthy and, trust me, you won’t believe how fast you’ll see it grow out.” – Yianni Tsapatori
Deep clean often
“Using an ice-cold rinse for the final rinse helps with optimum scalp health. Also, using a pale vinegar once a week will remove environmental build-up” – Josh Wood
Call for a beer
“Once while working on a film shoot, Dimple Kapadia asked me to get a can of beer from the hotel room fridge. At first I thought she was offering me a drink but she just poured half the beer can in my water spray bottle and asked me to spray each section of her hair with that mix instead of using any setting lotion and, oh my god! the result was this gorgeous, bouncy, shiny mane of beautiful hair!” – Kanta Motwani
