Each month comes with its own share of beauty launches across the spectrum that makes us want to spend all our money on them. We’ve put together the ten best that are worth real estate on your beauty shelves.

For a detox

With energising hibiscus (known for its ability to eliminate toxins) as its star ingredient, this serum saves skin exposed to external aggressors and pollutants by transforming oxidised proteins of the damaged epidermis into agents that can produce new proteins—which means cell renewal. Thus, skin is revived, strengthened and nourished.

Dior One Essential Skin Boosting Super Serum, Rs 8,300

dynamic-resurfacing-day-cream-with-spf-30-50-ml

Elemis’s trio of enzymes subtilisin, protease and papain—work with active ingredients like white truffle, raspberry seed oil and organic myrtle to moisturise and protect skin against free radicals. With the addition of UVA and UVB protection, it’s an overall essential.

Elemis Dynamic Resurfacing Day Cream SPF 30, Rs 6,865

lakme-argan-oil-radiance-00026-new-wo-shadow-sl-hr

All that argan

Lakme’s harnessing the extreme nourishing power of argan oil in its matte lipsticks and foundation. Expect super-soft textures and a hydrating finish that your skin ought to love. Plus, a skincare range of an oil-in-crème with SPF 30 and oil-in serum will ensure your skin never stays parched.

midnight-radiance-mask

For an overnight glow

1) Omorovicza’s soft gel mask will gently exfoliate with black willow extract and salicylic acid, fight hyperpigmentation with sand lily, hydrate your skin with red alga, and regulate sebum with copper gluconate—all while you sleep.

Omorovicza Midnight Radiance Mask, Rs 7,600
2) A sleeping mask that controls excess oil is exactly what young, blemished skin needs. Cooling tea tree essential oil in The Body Shop’s mask will purify skin and salicylic acid will help smoothen skin overnight.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Night Mask, Rs 1,995

15-physiolift_antiage_baume-nuit-30ml-sscont

For an anti-ageing routine

Because of its lightweight, smooth texture, Avène’s day, night and eye cream trio is a simple, pared-down routine to try if you’re getting yourself used to using multiple products to reverse ageing. They’re infused with hyaluronic acid (HA) mono-oligomers, fragments of HA that provide moisture where needed—think of them as your skin’s true friends, the ones who are always there when you’re in need.

Avène Physiolift Night Balm and Smoothing Day Cream, Rs 2,500 each

citronella_3

Oil well

Finding a state of calm in a chaotic world can be hard. Nykaa delves into aromatherapy with therapeutic essential oils to balance the body and mind. ( 350 each)
For anxiety and stress: Lavender—use it on your pillow or feet before bedtime.
For muscle pain and body ache: Lemongrass—five to six drops on your palms or your feet.
For hair growth and health: Ylang ylang—add 2-3 drops to coconut oil for conditioning.
For mood swings and migraine: Citronella—use 2-3 drops in a cold or hot compress and apply on affected area

eau-des-merveilles-bleue

Feel the blue

What it is: Hermès Eau des Merveilles Bleue EDP (100ml), Rs 8,750
What it bottles: A crisp, clean scent that when sprayed is like an approaching wave of a vast azure ocean. Sitting on a salty heart are citrus fruity tones and notes of the sea, warmed subtly by patchouli.
What it does: A spritz of this aquatic scent will definitely transfer you to cooler spaces. Evident because when I sprayed it, “Did someone spray a perfume?” was let out in the air. And when I coyly confessed it was me, a quick “Please use this every Monday morning—it’s exactly what we need to start our day. So fresh!” followed.

kerastase-chromatique-flacon-translucide-250ml-01-hd

Don't let it fade

Freshly coloured hair always feels great: that intense mocha revealing slivers of caramel all blended together perfectly. But then you step out, and days go by, and it all starts to fade. A powerful haircare routine to preserve the colour is mandatory. To neutralise the damage caused by water’s three molecules—chlorine, copper and calcium—Kérastase’s Reflection Chromatique range is infused with sodium citrate, yuzy and lychee effect. The ingredients will let you enjoy that mocha a little longer!

Kérastase Reflection Riche, Rs 1,800

lgcoor%c2%acal-paris-color-riche-matte-addiction-mon-jules

Matte versus matte

The people at L’Oréal Paris get your matte obsession, so they’re giving you two new variants to pick from—one’s fun, cool and casual; the other, high on glamour and moisture. Decisions, decisions.
1) Le Matte Crayon: Young and fresh, the sticks are bright and colourful, just like the five shades that go from hot pink to maroon. Rs 750
2) Color Riche Matte Addiction: Glam gold and black encases these hydrating matte bullets that come in nine hot hues like plum tangerine and scarlet. Rs 999

bobbi-brown-instant-full-face-concealer

Hide away

Of all the beauty launches that come my way, I always get most excited about concealers. After all, it’s my deserted-island product—at any given time you’ll find at least three on me, ’cause who knows what shadow, blemish or spot life may throw up. It all starts casually as an experiment but quickly goes down the mad scientist route. My latest subject—Bobbi Brown Instant Full Cover Concealer. I put the formula through a battery of tests and wore it in all situations I see myself in—under harsh sunlight, through a 90-minute ashtanga session, during a shower… I even wore it to bed and kept it overnight (advance apology to my dermat and the skin gods!) to truly test its potential. The cosmetic chemists at Bobbi Brown got the formula bang-on with this one—the texture is creamy yet doesn’t sit on top of skin, it’s super pigmented but not cakey, and the doe-foot applicator makes application effortless. My under-eye area has never felt more loved—the texture is creamy and goes on beautifully. A few taps later it sinks in comfortably—you’d never guess I’m running on anything less than eight-hour sleep. My only gripe is that I have to mix two shades to match my tone; one is too light, the other too dark, together they are magic. Dark circles—0. Concealer—1. —Nidhi Sharma Punjabi

Huda Kattan spills the beans on how she built her beauty empire

If there’s one person who deserves the title ‘Beauty Queen’, it’s Huda Kattan—digital beauty BFF to billions of girls across the globe. With her social media stardom and her own beauty line that sells by the second, she’s conquered your virtual world and vanity. Kattan gets candid with Vogue on how it all began

Touted as one of internet’s 25 most influential people by Time magazine, Huda Kattan has over 20 million followers on Instagram (and will probably reach 30 by the time you’re done reading this article), runs her own beauty line—Huda Beauty—which made false lashes accessible and almost a necessity, and is the reason why you can pick up that contour stick without a hint of hesitation. Her accolades are competing hard with the number of tricks in her beauty bag, and her personal dresser can make even a Sephora shy—can you imagine stocking over a 1,000 make-up brushes and more than 200 nude lipsticks? (And let’s not even get to how many eyeshadow palettes she owns.) It took her seven years since her first-ever post in April 2010, an undying love for beauty and the pure desire to share her passion with the world, to become a beauty blogging superstar. Unlike her peers, Huda loves to share—not just her own knowledge but that of aspiring beauty bloggers. A scroll through her feed plays testimony; it’s a mad matrix where she lets creative minds show off their imaginative skills through crazy tutorials, tricks and hacks that make you want to DIY that second, procrastination forgotten. Here, Huda shares a lot more, including her detailed skincare regimen, her favourite facial recipe, how to look flawless at all times and a beauty trick she recently learned from Bella Hadid.

ON HUDA BEAUTY
I got into beauty at quite a young age and was fascinated by how a few simple tricks can transform the way you look and feel. I first started wearing false lashes as a teenager and have been wearing them every day since. Being a make-up artist, I was never satisfied with the style and quality of lashes that were available at that time, so I often ended up stacking and customising the lashes myself to suit the client’s eye shape. After receiving several enquiries about my customised lashes, my sister Mona suggested I start my own line, which I then hand-designed myself and launched at Sephora in Dubai Mall in February 2013. I couldn’t have done this without Mona and my older sister Alya’s help.

ON HER OBSESSION
Beauty is a feeling and it can really change the way women feel about themselves. I believe a woman who is confident can take over the world. An empowered woman is fearless; she’s unstoppable. Beauty is always something I’ve been obsessed with. Being a hairy woman, my first beauty product was a pair of tweezers when I was in my early teens. Once I learnt how to shape my brows and saw the difference it can make to my face, I was fascinated. I then got into make-up and by the time I was 14, I was wearing a full glam face to school every day. I started doing my sisters’ and their friends’ brows, then did make-up at school events and concerts. Beauty has always been a huge part of my life and I’m very lucky to be able to share my love with my amazing social community.

ON HER TRAVEL TRICKS
You’ll be surprised. I only ever carry our Huda Beauty Lip Contour with me in the shade Trendsetter—it’s my absolute favourite! I don’t carry any other products with me because I set my make-up in such a way that it doesn’t need touch-ups. My La Mer lip balm, a sheet mask (I love Tony Moly and Charlotte Tilbury) and the Hand Chemistry Intense Youth Complex hand cream definitely come with me wherever I travel. I also like the Revitalash Eyelash Conditioner and always keep a small bottle of rose oil to keep my skin moisturised.

huda-kattan-vogue-india-2
ON HER LAST LESSON
I last shot an eyebrow tutorial using my new Tweezerman X Huda Beauty collaboration set. I’m all about perfect brows. I have quite an intense brow routine and symmetry is super important to me, so I wanted to show my full routine from start to finish.

ON HER HOTTEST HACK
Definitely Jamsu. Bella Hadid told me about it when I met her in Dubai. It’s when you submerge your face in cold water after baking. Apparently, this helps to set your make-up and gives you a flawless finish… It really works.

ON HER MOST BIZARRE BEAUTY EXPERIMENT
OMG, I’ve tried so many. I tried using a variety of substitutes for a primer, like Vagisil, Lube and Milk of Magnesia. I also tried enhancing my brows and making them look bushier by sticking small pieces of false lashes on them (this did NOT work). I’ve tried a ‘stamp-on’ brow using a potato, and also attempted to stain my lips using glue and food colouring… Don’t try this at home.

ON HER MIND THIS YEAR
This is a tough one. One thing I can’t wait for others to try this year is our new foundation, which launches mid-October.

ON HER SKINCARE
I actually don’t wash my face in the morning. I just splash it with water and dab it dry with a bamboo cloth. I then use the Mario Badescu Facial Spray with aloe, herb and rosewater, followed by the Aerin Rose Oil, and then the SkinCeuticals Skin Firming Cream. I also love the Anne Semonin Super Active Contour Serum for my eye area. Once I’ve removed my make-up in the evening with coconut oil, followed by cleansing it with the Bioderma Sensibio face wash; I wipe my face with a warm bamboo cloth and use the Clinique Clarifying Toner—I’ve been using this for over 10 years! Then, I apply a bit of Aerin Rose Oil, followed by the SkinCeuticals C E Freulic Serum, then the SkinCeuticals Skin Firming Cream, and lastly the SkinCeuticals Retinol 0.5. I drink loads of water to hydrate my skin. I’m also a firm believer in red-light therapy and the dermaroller to stimulate production of collagen and new skin cells.

ON HER DIET
Although I love a good burger or pizza, I try to stick to a healthy, carb-free meal plan most days and follow a vegetarian diet twice a week to detox. I usually like to have an omelette for breakfast or fresh fruits with Greek yoghurt, and a cup of bulletproof coffee (I swear by it). Ever since I’ve started drinking it, I’ve had so much more energy and focus through the day. Lunch and dinner can be anything from a salad to hummus with veggie sticks, a wrap, chicken breast and vegetables.

ON HER BEAUTY HAUNT
I’m definitely a Sephora girl and could spend hours browsing through their stores. When I was younger I’ve always wanted to work at Sephora; I mean, who wouldn’t want to play with make-up all day?

huda-kattan-vogue-india-1
ON FIVE THINGS THAT WILL SURPRISE YOU

  1. When I was younger and lived in the States, I had a Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle.
  2. I love the arts, whether it’s drawing in my notebook, sketching new lash designs or singing. I’m a creative soul.
  3. My husband Chris and I are high school sweethearts and have been together since we were 17.
  4. I’m a hard-core nerd and studied finance at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, graduated with honours and was the speaker at my graduation.
  5. Some of my hidden talents include belly dancing, barking like a dog and saying “Ho Ho Ho” like Santa!

ON MELT-PROOFING
Exfoliate, moisturise, prime, set, set and set again! The key to staying flawless is investing in a good powder—it’ll save you time, stress and money in touch-ups. Laura Mercier’s Secret Brightening Powder or Translucent Loose Setting Powders are iconic for a reason—they just work—but Kat Von D’s Brightening Powders are my new favourites. I think baking in the summer is fundamental for a last-all day look, and my trick is to bake with different powders in different areas: it’s almost like I’m contouring and colour correcting with translucent powders. I use a micro-fine peachy toned powder under my eyes (where make-up and concealers tend to crease) and on my T-zone—the finer the powder, the less likely it is to sit in creases and define wrinkles. I use a golden/yellow-toned translucent powder all over, and a darker one on my forehead and cheeks. I finish off with a setting spray to make sure my make-up does not budge.

ON STAYING FIT
I love yoga in the mornings but it’s not always possible with my schedule. Working out for me could range from dancing around in my closet to going up and down the stairs in our home. A workout can never feel like work to me, or I’ll lose interest. I also really enjoy boxing, which I like to do at night to de-stress a bit.

ON AT-HOME FACIALS
I’m obsessed with DIYs and love using yoghurt in my masks. My favourite is a combination of organic Greek yoghurt with honey and applying it as a face mask. This helps keep my skin balanced and the honey acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Sometimes, my husband Chris joins in on the fun and we watch TV with our face masks on.

ON HER GLOW TRICK
Put some freshly squeezed orange juice on a cotton pad, apply it all over your skin and then rinse if off. This will brighten up your skin instantly.

ON FAKING IT
Loads of concealer, tight-lining my eyes, a good pair of lashes and, of course, a glowing highlight to distract from the tiredness, is how I feign an eight-hour beauty sleep.

ON HER INSTA-FAME
I think of myself as everyone’s beauty BFF. I was one of the early adopters of social media, in particular Instagram, which is now our biggest platform. Our values have never changed and we genuinely use our platforms to share our love for beauty and support other artists. I always try to be as real as possible on social media and pride myself in only supporting brands I love and truly believe in. We try to make beauty as fun as possible and easily accessible, so sometimes you’ll see fun or crazy videos that we love to create to share with our community.

She’s coming to you… Huda Beauty is launching exclusively in India on Nykaa.com in October!

ON FIVE MINUTES TO FABULOUS
Oh, that’s easy…and it happens so often! I can get glammed up within a few minutes using these products. I apply a little bronzer all over my face. I love the Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzing Powder, mainly because it’s such a stunning colour. I then use the shades Henna & Sandalwood from our Huda Beauty Rose Gold Palette all over the lid. I create my wing liner using the Kat Von D Ink Liner. This liner is super black and I love the felt tip, which makes application a lot easier. Our Huda Beauty Faux Mink Lashes in Farah are my ultimate favourite, so these are also part of my beauty routine, whether I’m in a rush or not. Brows are very important to me; I fill my brows in a little bit and create a quick shape using Benefit’s ka-Brow!. And last but not least, our Huda Beauty Lip Contour in Trendsetter. I love our Lip Contours because they are so long-lasting and feel super comfortable on the lips. This look takes me less than five minutes.

ON HER FUTURE
I see the beauty world changing a lot in the next few years; I’d love to be a part of that movement. I’m so happy that individuality is being celebrated, brands are becoming more inclusive and, ultimately, it’s cool to be different.

ON CAREER ADVICE
Be ready to sacrifice a lot, and that sometimes means passing up on awesome opportunities. When you really want something you have to work for it. You need to push through and never give up. Be focused, and only do it if you are 100 per cent passionate about it.

20 tips from world experts to help you have the best hair, skin and health

Daily scroll of Insta-inspirations: check. Trending make-up tutorial binge: check. Now read what the world’s biggest beauty experts have to say.

Make-up tips:
Sometimes the key to expert-level make-up is as simple as using the right lighting. Sometimes, of course, it’s a bit more involved.

1. “A bright teal liner makes any eye colour pop and looks especially great on olive or darker skin. Plus, it’s got a ’60s feel that I love.” —François Nars

2. “Adding a highlight to your cupid’s bow before applying lipstick accentuates your pout and lip shape. And to make lips look surreal, re-apply a powder or cream highlight after lipstick application.” —Namrata Soni

3. After foundation, apply blush before any other make-up. “Often you’ll be surprised by how much it can brighten your face, and you won’t need anything else.”—Dick Page

4. If you have especially straight lashes, curl them and immediately brush on waterproof mascara. “It holds lashes up much better than a regular formula.” —Charlotte Tilbury

5. “A shimmering nude shadow can brighten up your eyes, as long as it’s a touch darker than your skin tone—if it’s lighter, it looks frosty.” —Troy Surratt

Hair tricks:
There’s no fairy dust shooting out of salon blow-dryers giving you awesome hair. The magic is in stylists’ tricks for loosening curls and building volume that never deflates beauty.

6. “Support your haircut or style with the right colour. On Indian hair, it’s important to break up the denseness of natural hair by choosing colours that enhance the shape, texture and movement. When done right, it will add dimension to the tresses and enhance your skin tone.” —Avan Contractor

7. “If your curls get tangled, condition the hair from root to tip and let it sit for five minutes before you shampoo.” —Kim Kimble

8. “Before styling hair use dry shampoo—it absorbs excess oil and dirt if hair isn’t fresh and gives it some texture, or makes the hair matte if freshly cleaned and too soft. This trick gives it more body and a more lived-in textured feel.” —Gabriel Georgiou

9. “Follow a blow-out with cold air—the heat is to dry the hair, the cool air is to set it. You will find that this closes the cuticle tight and you will get a lot of shine. Use the nozzle of the dryer to direct air downwards.” —Rod Anker

10. “Mist dry hair with hairspray, wrap it around medium Velcro rollers, and blast with hot air to set. In five minutes you have soft, polished waves.” —Nathaniel Hawkins

Skin advice:
Dermatologists cut through the noise and jargon and give us the skincare secrets they really do live by.

11. “The most important ingredient, collagen, which is naturally present in the body, has somehow never been used to its full potential. To address wrinkles, fine lines, skin laxity and loss of volume, enlarged pores and uneven skin tone, a 4D non-invasive laser face lift done in combination with topical agents like prescribed creams will help stimulate collagen and reduce signs of ageing.” —Dr Abhijit Desai

12. “If you have dark circles under your eyes, retinol thickens collagen under the eyes in about a month, which makes the skin less transparent.” —David Bank

13. “I’ve seen patients apply sunscreen correctly before sun exposure, reapply, and still burn. If you’re planning a tropical trip in the middle of winter, prepare your skin by applying sunscreen all over your face and body every night for a full month. It has a cumulative effect on skin.” —Jeannette Graf

14. “Don’t just focus on the face. Apply a thick moisturiser to your elbows, knees and ankles thrice a day. At bedtime, add a retinol-based cream to the moisturiser. Do it religiously for three months and watch the darkness on those areas vanish.” —Dr Jaishree Sharad

15. “Use ice on a zit three to four times a day to calm it down, or do warm compresses if you want a zit under the skin to come out. The best way to conceal a zit mark is to use a green corrector before your regular concealer—green is the opposite of red and it will cover up the spot completely.” — Dr Kiran Lohia

Health habits:
So much to do for your body, so little time (and steady inspiration). This healthy panel simplifies it.

16. “Choose a fixed day per week to commit to fasting for 24 hours. If you can, only drink herbal non-caffeine teas and water through the day. If this is too difficult, have a glass of juice made of cucumber, parsely, doodhi (bottle gourd), kale and apples, twice during the day. This helps your body get rid of toxins and excess fat, reboots the immune system, increases energy levels, and leaves you feeling light and happy.” — Radhika Vachani

17. “Keep jumping and skipping like you did when you were young. Plyometric movements are forgotten as adults but are valuable for maintaining power in our legs and they do a great job at toning and shaping as well.” — Ramona Braganza

18. Make a conscious effort to move as much as possible—sitting is the new smoking. Don’t be on a ‘see food’ diet where you eat everything that’s in front of you. Make the right choices.” — Yasmin Karachiwala

19. “When heading out for a party, do a short intense modified Ashtanga practice—a couple of surya namaskars, some sitting forward bends with the Vinyasa in between, backbends and inversions, followed by a shavasana and meditation. It gets you sweaty, and all the circulation and breathing will give you this inner glow. You’ll have this calm, relaxed yet high energy within you that really makes people gravitate towards you.” — Deepika Mehta

20. “Eat within an hour of waking up. Wait longer and your body will think it’s starving. And when it thinks it’s starving, it stores the first meal you eat as fat.” —Pooja Makhija

If there’s one thing we learned from the spring/summer 2018 runways, it’s that beauty rules are changing. And being broken into newer, fresher perspectives. And here’s exactly how you can join the new revolution.

Colour pop lids
Stray away from simple. The eyes grabbed all the attention this season with a burst of colours—a lavender that spread into a pink, with a happy blue framing it all at Anupama Dayal; just a wash of sunshine all over at Nida Mahmood; or a riot of colours at Rimzim Dadu—you have enough inspiration to let your imagination run wild on the eyes.
Seen at: Anupama Dayal, Rimzim Dadu, Nida Mahmood, Payal Jain and at The Grand Finale

Draping
Don’t know just where to stop your brush while blushing? Let go. All the way to your temples. Drape your cheekbones all the way up and watch the colour add life to your face.
Seen at: First Cut

The graphic black
If you must stick to black (because for some, black will always be the new black), then you must also divulge this love further by experimenting and really showing off the power of this colour—by going graphic, working with shapes and sizes to your heart’s desire.
Seen at: Ashish N Soni

High on shine
The sooner you accept that gloss is back and your parched lips deserve to look and feel less like a deserted island, the better your lips shall look (and feel). Models walked the runway with full-on glossy pouts, sheer and slightly pigmented and it only added to their overall glow.
Seen at: Anomaly, Payal Pratap

Slick and sleek
There’s something uniquely sexy and direct about sleek, lustrous hair as opposed to a messy style. They speak confidence. And they spoke it with centre parts, severe side parts and simply straight up lose on the shoulders this time around.
Seen at: Hemant Nandita, Ikai, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Abhi Singh

Monotone make-up
A delicate wash of blush on the eyes, the cheeks and melting onto the lips—the monotone trend, of using a single shade from a colour family, will add all the dreaminess to your next date night.

From a cancer survivor to a 78-year-old trekker: Meet India’s body warriors

An Everest climber, a globe-trotting yogi, a 78-year-old trekker and a true fighter enter a room—and everyone around is galvanised into action. Meet the resilient women blazing the trail for the rest to follow.

LISA RAY
Model, actor, writer, wellness entrepreneur, yoga teacher, cancer survivor, 45

“Alignment and stillness are more important to me now than, say, 20 years ago. I’m a much more harmonious and calmer person today. Slowing down is a great discipline. There’s great strength and resilience in stillness.”

When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. This Murakami quote resonates through our conversation, as Lisa Ray recalls the years that have passed and moulded her into the resolute soul she is today. “That I’ve experienced a literal rebirth by virtue of my stem cell transplant means I have a greater compassion towards my body. I love the scars I have retained on my chest where I had a Hickman line implanted and that’s a big source of strength for me, to see the scar every day and flaunt it.” She believes that today she’s in the best shape of her life, the fittest she has ever been. “In the early part of my career, I was known as a pinup and associated with swimsuits and a great body. But I was weak, unhealthy and self-conscious. Today, I’m on continual medical treatment—and steroids—which means I’ll never be extra slim, but at 45 I love my body more than ever before,” she says. “I’m learning tennis right now, I’ve got an hour at the gym, and yoga has always been an integral part of my life.” Ray also hikes in Hong Kong, and practises lagree, a workout technique akin to Pilates on steroids. Today she prefers Iyengar yoga, with its meditative qualities and its ability to align you and open up your body in different ways. “And my experience with multiple myeloma has convinced me that you live your truth or die your lie.”

USHA SOMAN
Trekker, 78

usha-soman-vogue-indiaImage: Tarun Vishwa

“People live very sedentary lives today. Ignore phones. Make physical exercise part of your daily routine, whether it’s just walking or climbing stairs. Guide your children because they will do what they see around them. But never force your likes or dislikes on them. Nurture their potential.”

She may be the mother of one of India’s fittest (ergo hottest) model-turned-marathon-crusaders but when Milind Soman protectively escorts Usha, his mum, to her first ever photo shoot, all eyes are on her. In her traditional nauvari sari, her hair up in a simple bun and eyes lined with years of experiences (which include being a biochemist and teacher), the mother of four is demure, quietly amused and, naturally, a tad nervous about facing the camera. Milind is always around for support, but few seconds into posing on a pedestal, one leg casually balancing on a dancer’s knee without the slightest wobble, she’s proved us right and answered her own question: “Why did you pick me for this shoot?” Usha Soman is what we all want to be when we grow up. She wakes up at 5.30am, drinks half a litre of warm water, and takes off for her 5km walk. She eats everything, “but no junk.” She’s completed a 100km walk in 41 hours for the Oxfam Trailwalk event, prefers walking barefoot, and can plank for more than a minute in a sari. Watching her breeze through multiple takes without a break, the crew is enthralled, wondering how her fitness obsession became. Her reply is unassumingly real, “We had no idea about ‘fitness’. The term has become popular now. Back then, everyone was more or less fit because they were active.” Her secret is as simple as it is effective: “I walk. Everyday. Everywhere.” Milind, now we know you did get it from your mama!

Mountaineer, 38

“There have been times when I didn’t eat for over 15 hours while climbing, and normally that isn’t something I thought my body could take. But it’s when you put yourself through such situations that you realise your body is capable of incredible things. Your mental fitness is put to test—and it’s that power that pushes you.”

Her first ascent was in 2011—up the world’s highest mountain. She did it twice in one season, completing it in 10 days. Then she beat her own record in 2017, by summiting Mount Everest twice in five days, making her the first woman in the world to do so. Anshu Jamsenpa, mother of two girls, 16 and 11 years old, always knew she was made to walk the road less travelled. “I was always ready to jump into any kind of adventure activity—river rafting, paragliding, car racing. Then I got introduced to mountaineering and how through it you can bring in a lot of changes—socially and economically—and I knew this was my path.” Jamsenpa went through all kinds of rigorous training—running, jogging, cycling, aerobics, yoga—for four hours daily, and on weekends went hiking with a backpack that weighed 20-25kg. But nothing can prepare one for nature’s unpredictability except one’s state of mind and will power. “The first time we summited, the weather was bad, with visibility close to zero. I didn’t even realise I had reached the top until my Sherpa told me. For those 10 minutes, I was in God’s home. I had goosebumps. And while on top of the world, there was a bigger task ahead of me—to come back to ground level safely,” she recalls. Jamsenpa regularly meditates and concentrates on recovery after every climb with deep-tissue massages, steam baths and hydration. Next spring, her goal is to summit Kanchenjunga and Lhotse, both over 8,000 metres high.

DEEPIKA MEHTA
Yoga teacher, trekker, 39

“If you look for the one thing within yourself that you feel passionate about, and then set a realistic goal, it just makes you wake up every day with something to look forward to, and when you have that every single day something inside you changes.”

Not sure what it is about yogis but all that talk about auras and vibes seems all too real when they’re around. Deepika Mehta is a real-life manifestation of optimism and positivity, and a very flexible one at that. Her words can turn into a list of motivational quotes to wake up to every morning. To think that the same person who was told she couldn’t walk anymore after a 40ft fall while rock climbing now travels the world teaching yoga and doing things with her limbs you didn’t think possible, is a good reminder that nothing is impossible. “I function the best when I believe. For me yoga was the kind of spiritual awakening, beyond the physical aspects, that helped heal me. Even now, the process hasn’t stopped.” Her personal practice starts with a two-hour Ashtanga session in the morning, followed by a handstand training in the afternoon for an hour. Currently, she’s attempting to go into a scorpion from a handstand, and you might have to hold your jaw back once you Google what that is. “Every day is a discipline. When you wake up at 4am your mind’s natural tendency is to ask you to go back to sleep, but staying connected to the fact that I’ve not reached my highest potential keeps me going.” And that’s also why it’s important to have mental discipline. “When you connect with your breath you go into a space that is beyond negative obstacles, which helps you harness something that is greater than what you thought your limitations were.”

How to get Deepika Padukone’s royal beauty look from Padmavati

$

Trust Sanjay Leela Bhansali to bring larger-than-life sets to life and make our eyes truly see the grandeur of yesteryear royalty, perfectly demonstrated in the new song, ‘Ghoomar’ from his latest, Padmavati. The song and whatever we’ve seen of Deepika Padukone in the movie make us wonder: what would it be like to really be a ‘rani’ aka queen aka your (inner) real self? Because, why think of yourself any lesser?

Now before you adjust your crown, let’s get you started with a clear set of rules to get Rani Padmavati’s (Deepika Padukone) beauty look—perfect for your next Bollywood-themed party or Halloween bash (or even a wedding minus the unibrow)—complete with your own royal beauty kit. Go on, show the world who’s #queen.

SLAY, BUT MUCH TO YOUR DISMAY, IT DOESN’T MEAN GO ALL OUT
Key is to stick to the classic approach without experimenting too much. One look at Bhansali’s muse and you know the most striking feature is the eyes. They pierce through you with the strongest of convictions, and we think it’s got to do a lot with that intense black kohl that lines Padukone’s entire eye. Do exactly that, and don’t hold back, because you have to ultimately smudge it further to give it a smoked-out effect. Top it off with multiple layers of mascara, or better yet, fake it with falsies if you have it in you.

Use: Maybelline EyeStudio Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil in Sleek Onyx, Huda Beauty Classic Lash in Lana, Inglot Volume and Waterproof Mascara

YOU CAN UNIBROW, BUT LET ‘EM KEEP GUESSING
Now you see them, now you don’t. Make that your mantra while trying Rani Padmavati’s iconic unibrow. Basically, stick to your original shape—no thickening of any kind. Keep your brows sleek, sharp and arched, and simply join them in the centre with a brow pencil by challenging yourself to be the most light-handed you’ve ever been. Think of yourself as Edward Scissorhands for those crucial moments, and work that symmetry like a pro.

Use: Nykaa Brow Chika Wow

JOIN THE NATURAL MOVEMENT
And we don’t mean go vegan or organic, but embrace the beautiful thing called melanin you’ve been blessed with. The foundation should seamlessly blend with your natural skin tone and enhance the colour of your skin. Go for a creamy, lightweight liquid formula to come close to achieving Padukone’s flawless, healthy skin, with just a subtle wash of brick-nude blush between the cheekbones and contours of your cheeks, in upward motions. Stick to creamy matte mahogany for the lips.

Use: Estée Lauder Double Wear Nude Water Fresh Makeup SPF 30, Fenty Beauty Match Stix Trio, L’Oréal Paris Color Riche Matte Addiction in Mahogany Studs

MAKE BINDI YOUR BAE
It’s the cherry on the cake—the finishing touch to your Indian princess’ day out look. Don’t skip it. It’s the one thing that suits all skin types, face types, hair types. A little red dot is all you need. Great, now look outside, your chariot awaits.

Use: The red powder from the makeshift temple in your house.

5 trending beauty innovations we can’t wait to try in India

We rounded up the latest additions on our beauty bucket list, from what we’ve seen trending internationally. Would you try these?

Micellar water shampoos

For those who’ve tried (and loved) micellar waters to cleanse their skin (I’m a loyalist too!), the technology is extending to hair cleansing as well. This means replacing your shampoo, with a gentler… water. We reckon (or hope) it reaches Indian store shelves soon, as it makes perfect sense, given our need for daily hair-washing due to humidity and what not!

aqua-physical-aquaphysical

Float fitness

From what we can see, exercising while floating in a pool is the coolest thing to do right now in the States and UK. What is it? A combination of yoga-inspired HIIT routines that include planks, burpees and other moves, done on a board called the Aquabase. The constant struggle to stay afloat engages and stabilises the entire body. What’s the worst that could happen? You’ll fall off, take a dip and hop back on your board.

Skincare in milk carton

If you stop over at Bangkok airport, you’ll notice tons of milk cartons in all sizes in the beauty department at duty free. No, milk is not the new off-the-shelf moisturiser, but being one of the popular ingredients in skincare, local brands have packaged their products in cute little milk cartons to really hero the ingredient. From creamy cleansers to lotions—the milk cartons contain them all.

Glass skin

Trust Koreans to take their glowing skin to a shiny new level. The latest goal—glass skin—is basically absolutely a smooth, hydrated complexion that has this glass-like, translucent sheen. And yes, it isn’t it an overnight phenomenon—it involves a long-term commitment, given to a very intensive skincare regimen. But if the results are that bright and shiny, we don’t mind doing it like the Koreans! Any Indian dermats reading this?

Prebiotics

Hey kombucha, you’re cool, but I want more. Given that probiotics aren’t just a fad and are actually good for gut health, it isn’t a surprise that brands are now introducing ‘prebiotics’ in their products—foods that feed the already existing bacteria on the skin. We’re still in two minds about this one, but we’re willing to try.

Finely stencilled brows, radiant skin and that trademark 100-watt smile: Anushka Sharma stepped into the industry with her catwalk-ready looks, and has managed to only outdo herself in the nine years she has spent in the A-lister club since. Any wonder then, that beau Virat Kohli has a hard time tearing his eyes off her in front of the camera, and behind it as well.

Film career
Barely a year away from completing a decade in the film industry (from 2008 when she debuted opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi), and she has managed to light up the screen in every single movie and appearance. She delivered on the promise she offered in her debut with back-to-back hits, including Band Baaja Baaraat (2010), Ladies vs Ricky Bahl (2011) and Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) among others. 2015 marked a landmark in her career as she turned producer with the critically-acclaimed NH10. She revisited the producer’s chair for the fantasy comedy film, Phillauri earlier this year, and was last seen opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Jab Harry Met Sejal—and in all of this, her natural glow remained a constant. When it comes to her beauty evolution—apart from being naturally blessed with baby soft skin and a lustrous mane—the lively actress traverses from bombshell to girl-next-door city girl, effortlessly.

Glitzy beginnings
A sultry bronzed-out beach face, bambi-esque doll eyes, dark wine lips—the young debutante did it all as she found a toehold in the industry. 2011 for Sharma was all about that high glam look: long, fluttering lashes, glittering eyes and shades of pink on her lips. In 2012, her standout look was the contoured face, bold red lips and sleek straight hair. She continued her streak over the next two years of keeping her base smooth and chiselled, always stepping out with oodles of mascara. Not one to think twice about getting that drastic haircut and styles (unlike most Indian women), when Sharma needs a hair makeover, she goes all out. In 2011 and until 2012 she kept it long and lustrous, but played it up with beach waves, bombshell blowouts and sleek ponytails. She even appeared in purple streaks for an event at the time. In 2013, she went for bangs, switching between straight blunt over the forehead to a soft side-fringe.

Makeover moment
Then came her makeover moment in 2014, when she went cold turkey and shed her locks for a sexy new bob. She continued to sport a cutesy lob through 2015 and had fun with her short crop—with soft curls, top knots and pin-up tails. The year also saw her tucking the rulebook out of reach and instead opting for all shades in the lipstick lexicon: from bright corals and burgundy to peaches and pink.

2016 was when she decided to go for the gusto, and gave her hairstylist Yianni Tsapatori free reign. From boss lady buns and slicked back hair, she has since worked her way up the food chain and even made the runway-favourite, wet-look hair work for her at the promotions of Phillauri earlier this year. And you thought second day hair was all about no-nonsense updos?

The 29-year-old livewire was most recently seen making heads turn at the Vogue Women of the Year 2017 red carpet in a sizzling Falguni and Shane Peacock gown, and metallic eyes to match. Flip through the gallery above to keep up with her beauty kit over the years.

With that live-wire personality and those expressive features, you wouldn’t be far off the mark for saying that Bollywood chose Alia Bhatt, and not the other way round. In the short five years that she’s spent in the business, Bhatt has quickly claimed the big screen her own, tirelessly delivering back-to-back blockbusters.

After her debut in 2012 in Student of the Year, the sprightly 19-year-old turned around and delivered a trailblazing performance in her sophomore feature, Highway (2012). She kept the cash counter ringing with an incessant parade of commercially hit movies, including 2 States (2014) and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania (2014), among others. But if you thought you’d seen it all, Bhatt outdid even herself in 2016: starting out with the critically acclaimed Kapoor & Sons, moving on to a gut-wrenching role in Udta Punjab and ending the year on a high note with Dear Zindagi. Just like her transition in the movies, she has gone from the girl-next-door to a bankable star in half a decade. Not to say that she’s grown out of her lively persona, but there’s a new dimension evident in her beauty books, while retaining that natural, vibrant character that defines her.

Blockbuster beginnings
What started off as simple glossy lips and hair let loose messily in 2012 became more refined in 2013 as she started adding more texture to those long locks; resulting in side-swept waves and perfectly blow-dried hair. It was in 2014 that our March cover star starting experimenting with colours—bright corals, soft pinks and toffee tones on her lips became a staple—and she matched it well with a dewy, fresh face. 2015, meanwhile, was all about adding definition to those feminine features—think beautifully bronzed skin, chiselled cheeks and structured hairdos.

Coming of age
2016 was the year of playful experimentation. She worked with accessories and imaginative hairstyles like high ponytails and braids that are nearly impossible to do by yourself. This year, we’ve seen her pick even more minimalistic looks by focusing on one feature of her face; think: a stunning smoky eye or a bold bright lip. Being the overachiever that she is, she dared to go where few actors do, and traded in her silky locks for a crisp lob that she proceeded to style in a variety of textured waves and non-boring updos.

For those days when you can’t even, channel some of Bhatt’s joie de vivre and simply tuck in bobby pins in geometric shapes in slicked back hair to create an instant work of art. Top off with a creamy tangerine matte, and you’re good to go. Looking for a failsafe go-to to hedge your bets on? The lively 24-year-old swears by the wonders of a messy bun and tightlined eyes.

Karan Johar’s weight loss journey: How he lost 17kg in 4 months

$
0
0

Keeping up with Karan Johar’s lifestyle is no easy feat. Father to two beautiful babies, he’s constantly working and traveling, and in spite of an erratic lifestyle, is looking fabulously fit these days. It’s got a lot to do with his discipline, dedication to staying healthy and fit and a strict workout and diet regimen designed by his weight loss trainer, fitness consultant Kunal Gir. It was Johar’s good friend Ranbir Kapoor who suggested his personal trainer Gir, when the producer expressed how impressed he was with Kapoor’s transformation for the Sanjay Dutt biopic. And that’s how Johar’s own personal transformation began. Gir shares a leaf out of Johar’s fitness diary—here’s how to lose weight like one of Bollywood’s favourite personalities.

Karan Johar’s workout for weight loss

“We alternate between weight training and water workout four times a week,” says Gir about Johar’s exercise routine. “When we first met, Karan told me he enjoyed swimming, so I’ve tried to incorporate a high intensity cardio session in the water as a substitute to regular cardio—and it’s a lot more intense.”

Karan Johar’s weight loss diet

For Johar, his diet is very important and he tries to stick to a no-sugar, no-direct-carbs diet—with lots of organic vegetables and proteins from meats and eggs, to ensure his weight loss plan stays on track. “He eats every three hours. He only eats food cooked in macadamia nut oil, and his fibre intake has increased since his body now responds to higher amounts of fibre,” says Gir. And the eggs he consumes aren’t any ordinary eggs. They have to be high in omega 3, which means that the chicken has to follow a diet too, a healthy one, which includes consumption of flax seeds.

Gir is pleased that despite his lifestyle and travel schedule, Johar is very strict with his diet and ensures he works out for at least three if not four days a week. “A lot of people lose muscle mass instead of burning fat and that makes them weak. But Karan’s dedication to exercising and a good, healthy diet has ensured he’s not lost any muscle mass but burned mostly fat.” He’s continuing to be regular with his workouts, and Gir continues to help him in this transformational journey. And the fact that he’s lost 11 inches off of his waist, and 17kg in roughly four months, is enough visible proof.

In fact, Gir even posted a picture with Johar on his Instagram account in May, when they started on his weight loss journey, and it’s clear how far Johar has come.

Very happy to introduce my next Bollywood client to you. I am sure you recognize him. Director, actor, TV show host and more – @karanjohar But now its my job now to make sure that in a few months, you DONT recognize him 😉 I must add – Working in Mumbai these past months with great actors, directors who ride on big money, popularity and success….I must say I am extremely impressed by how warm and welcoming they have been towards me. One would assume that with such success and popularity they would be arrogant , but quite the contrary. I had the same warm, friendly and real feel from KJ , like I have with RK. I am not just excited to work with such big names, but more lucky to be working with such humble and friendly people. Much to learn. #ranbirkapoor #karanjohar

When in Rome…

The feeling: If it is possible for a single spritz to take you to the glittering, cobbled lanes of Rome, on a starlit night of mystery and adventure, Bulgari’s new Goldea The Roman Night comes close.

The scent: A musky floral with juicy top notes of mulberry and black peony that open into a blooming bouquet of jasmine and tuberose, the scent settles into warm notes of black musk, patchouli and vetiver.

Bulgari Goldea The Roman Night EDP (75ml), Rs 7,050

hermes-twilly-dhermes-edp-50ml-rs-6150

’90s kid

Who it’s for: Millennials in their twenties

What it looks like: In one word: happiness. A bright luminescent peach shines through the square bottle topped with a glossy black hat. The finishing touch—a colourful Hermès scarf around the neck—makes it the perfect little accessory to carry around in your bag.

How it smells: Like the fun, freedom-loving, adventurous millennial souls. Christine Nagel, the house’s perfumer, wanted to capture that multifaceted nature of young women—their cheerful zest—into a scent that isn’t too sugary or sweet. Nagel picked three strong heroes—ginger, tuberose and sandalwood—each ingredient offering a unique sense to the scent. With a blend of woody, green and fresh notes, Twilly is vibrant, uplifting and, at the same time, not too heady.

Hermès Twilly d’Hermès EDP (50ml), Rs 6,150

Clayed in

Problem: Oily scalp, dry lengths

Need: A haircare routine that tackles the many moods of your mane. A powerful blend of ingredients that purify, refresh and hydrate all at once.

Find it in… the L’Oréal Paris Extraordinary Clay collection—a trio of shampoo and conditioner (with clay to deep and power cleanse) and a scalp refresher that works at -7 degrees Celsius to give an icy cool sensation by reducing the oil in the scalp.

L’Oréal Paris Extraordinary Clay Shampoo, Rs 150; L’Oréal Paris Extraordinary Clay Scalp Refresher, Rs 265

aquis-hair-turban-rs-2250

Aquis Hair Turban

It’s a… towel specifically for hair.

It claims to… be far more amazing than your regular towel. The textured microfibre is super absorbent and significantly reduces drying time.

The first thing I noticed was… how lightweight and compact it is. I wash my long hair every day and piling the heavy, terrycloth towel on my head contributes to a little neck pain and a whole lot of nuisance. This one comes with a loop and button enclosure so the towel secures conveniently at the back of your head.

When I used it… I only had one thought—where have you been all my life? I wrapped my sopping wet hair and went about my routine. Fifteen minutes later my hair was dry enough for serum and leave-ins. I put my hair in the towel-turban hybrid a second time after applying the styling products and left it on for 20 minutes while I got dressed. I took it off right before I left the house and by the time I got to office my hair settled into natural, wavy gorgeousness.

An expert explained it… “Even the plushest towels have a threshold for how much water they can absorb. Once your terry-cloth towel has reached its threshold, it becomes heavy, tugs at your hair and causes breakage. Aquis has been engineered to dry hair quickly and correctly. Its ultra-absorbent fibres are thinner than silk and woven tightly together to wick the water away faster from your hair without friction or rubbing,” explains Michel Baltazar, creative technical director at Jean-Claude Biguine India.

So now… I use it every day. I have three pieces—two in use, and one in case every woman in the world discovers it and it gets sold out. Or the brand simply stops manufacturing it. —Nidhi Sharma Punjabi

Available exclusively at Jean-Claude Biguine salons. Aquis Hair Turban, Rs 2,250

pantene-oil-replacement-rs-150

Slick and smooth

It took a lot for me to break my cardinal care rule for my long, coloured tresses that of using a deep conditioning mask after a wash—so I could put this cream to test. I massaged the light formula onto my damp hair, let it air dry, and went about my daily routine. While the leave-in did tame the freshly formed frizz (that usually stands up when hair transitions from wet to dry) and my tresses lovingly soaked up the blend, I felt the need for another walnut-sized amount after a few hours. For a multi-purpose cream that moisturises without a greasy residue, protects from heat and controls frizz, it doesn’t disappoint. –NSP

Pantene Oil Replacement, Rs 150

dermalogica-precleanse-balm-rs-3250

Step zero

To put it simply, a little dollop of Dermalogica’s balm-to-oil cleansing formula will melt away your base, unclog your pores of the day’s dirt and get your skin ready for a healthy skincare routine. Normal to dry skin types will benefit from the natural biolipid complex that locks in hydration and apricot kernel oil that nourishes. It comes with a double-sided, ergonomically-designed mitt to really get those pesky pore-blocking particles.

Dermalogica PreCleanse Balm, Rs 3,250

dr-sheths-basic-brightening-collection-rs-699-onwards

If it’s what the doctor ordered…

…and made, you can trust it. Dermatologist and clinical consultant Dr Rekha Sheth, along with her son Aneesh, has created a skincare line for Indian skin. With her expertise and his doctorate in pharmacology, trust them to customise potent potions that tackle Indian skin issues like pigmentation and taking into consideration our moody weather.

Expect: A cleanser, glotions for acne and spots, sunscreen and a youth enhancer with hyaluronic acid, avocado oil and more.

Dr. Sheth’s Basic Brightening Collection, Rs 699 onwards

heliocare-ultra-d-capsules-rs-4000

Eat your SPF

We are excited about the latest addition to our supplement shelf. Heliocare Ultra D, a sun-specific supplement, contains antioxidants to prevent UVA damage, reduce the risk of photo ageing and guard against skin cancer. Most of us skimp on sunscreen and only apply it to parts that will be exposed to sun, but this one acts like a sun shield for your whole body. While it can’t replace your actual sunscreen, we don’t mind the extra safety. For maximum protection, take one a half hour before you step out.

Heliocare Ultra-D Capsules, Rs 4,000

estee-lauder-advanced-night-repair-eye-concentrate-matrix-rs-6000

Eye opener

What is pale peach in colour, comes in a little brown bottle and has been around since the ’80s? If you’re a true beauty junkie, the phrase ‘little brown bottle’ is a dead giveaway. For everyone else, it’s Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair. Over the years, the cult serum has spawned many avatars. The latest addition to the family, the Eye Concentrate Matrix, comes packed with hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to rectify the results of screen time, sleepless nights and squinting in the sunlight. While I wasn’t bowled over by the previous formulas—they were both not rich enough for my taste—this one has a creamy, quick-absorbing, nourishing texture that my under-eye area really loves. The massage-tip applicator, although luxurious, doesn’t satisfy my hydration craving—I double dip every time to get enough product for both my eyes. But all that hyaluronic acid feels refreshing, like a tall drink of water that my skin quickly gulps down. Eye approve! —NSP

With Bengali actor Debashree Roy for an aunt and Kajol for a cousin, it should come as little surprise that Rani Mukerji found herself drawn towards the big screen. After a critically acclaimed debut in the social drama, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat (1997), it looked like Bollywood wasn’t about to let go of her soon either.

Following up on the promise she showed in her debut, Mukerji delivered two blockbusters in the same year—Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Ghulam (1998). Over the next decade, she went on to cement her status as the archetypal Yash Raj heroine with several hits to her credit, including Saathiya (2002), Hum Tum (2004), Veer Zaara (2004) and Bunty Aur Babli (2005) among others. Last seen in the gritty thriller Mardaani (2014), Mukerji took a timeout from the silver screen to tie the knot in a low-key ceremony in Italy with Aditya Chopra and welcomed their daughter, Adira, the next year. Always true to her delicate, elegant personality—her Bengali genes are evident in that dusky glow and caramel eyes. Let’s look at the reigning Rani’s beauty evolution over the years.

The golden years
With a lush halo of waves and a flawless glow, Mukerji made heads turn when she stepped into the industry. Through the years, a lot has changed, but the one feature that remains a constant as her makeup favourite are those Bambi eyes. Accentuating her best feature, she’s tried different variations of the smoky eye, glittery shadows and long lashes that have always complemented her peepers. When it comes to lip shades, nude is clearly her go-to hue: from 2006 till 2011, she’s done everything from the glossy peach to a matte beige—pairing it with intense eyes to balance the look. It is from 2012 that she ventured into the bright bold territory of the reds.

Step up
But it was only in 2014 that the star really experimented with colours—think deep burgundies and dark magentas. With each year, Rani Mukerji has upped her beauty game, but 2015 really was her year when it comes to acing her makeup—from chiseled highlighted cheeks and rosy lips to a bold red pucker and a Grecian updo—she tried it all. Making a statement at the Vogue Beauty Awards 2015 red carpet, she opted for subtle smoky eyes, a peachy pink lip and added the final bridal touch with starkly visible sindoor.

The arrival of her firstborn daughter in late 2015 meant that her motherly duties kept her busy, and she went MIA on the social circuit in 2016. But much to the delight of the paps, she made a comeback this year with kohl-rimmed eyes and her signature radiant glow in tow. As she gears up to shoot her return to the big screen with Hichki, Mukerji can be spotted about town in matte finish nude lips, soft smoky eyes and messy waves, served au naturel. Flip through the gallery above to follow her beauty evolution over the years.

This new perfume will make the perfect gift for the millennial in your life

In one word, Twilly d’Hermès looks like freedom. A bright luminescent bubblegum peach shines through the square bottle topped with a glossy black bowler hat. The finishing touch—a colourful Hermès scarf around the neck—makes it the perfect little accessory to carry around in your bag.

But what’s special about this little scent, is that its perfumer, Christine Nagel, drew her inspiration from young, contemporary women who turn convention on their head. “Playfulness is in their nature,” she says of the muse. “The idea came while observing young women on the street. I observed them in groups, as these young women are rarely alone. I saw them re-appropriate our objects, particularly our silk scarves. I watched them subvert our codes and create a new world for themselves from this heritage, with energy, imagination and boldness,” she explains.

What’s in it?
The three-ingredient perfume—a blend of ginger, tuberose and sandalwood—is a manifestation of the young millennial women who have fun together, without ever renouncing their individuality. And so does the scent, with each note keeping its individual unique sense of scent so that the trio is woven together but none impair the other.

What does it smell like?
Not overtly sweet or powdery—because that’s exactly what Nagel was venturing away from—Twilly is all that lighter, fresher with just a hint of sweet to balance the intensity of ginger.

What does it feel like?
It’s this cheerfulness, this strong sense of individuality and love for freedom, that makes this perfume the kind you want to spritz to brighten up a day. Or like Nagel describes it, “this creation echoes the free spirit that inspires the house of Hermès, and its astonishing ability to challenge the status quo, to be enterprising and innovative.”

An ethereal glow, those piercing kohl-rimmed eyes and perfectly moulded features—Kareena Kapoor Khan’s the kind of star whose beauty can be defined in many words, yet none have come close to doing it justice in the two glorious decades she’s spent in Bollywood.

After bagging the Filmfare Award for Best Debut in Refugee (2000), she only kept up the good work from there. By the time Kabhi Khushie Kabhi Gham rolled around in the December of 2001, she already had five films under her belt and her portrayal of the cult-favourite character, Poo cemented her status as a bona fide A-lister. Over the next few years, she became the queen of the rom-com genre with Mujhse Dosti Karoge! (2002) and Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon (2003) among others. Her career went through a rocky period circa 2005, but she bounced back stronger than ever before as the iconic Geet in Jab We Met (2007). In the decade since, she has tied the knot with Saif Ali Khan, welcomed their first born son Taimur Ali Khan and found the time to deliver some more blockbusters, including 3 Idiots (2009), Ra.One (2011), Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Udta Punjab (2016).

Much like her career graph, she’s grown from a baby-faced girl-next-door to the enviable queen of Bollywood, matching her royal status with sharp, polished looks. Join us in flipping back the pages of her beauty book.

Wonder years
As a debutante, Khan’s lit-from-within glow and expressive features turned her into an overnight sensation. Looking back, in 2011 and 2012 she was big on high-shine lips—think glossy pinks and peaches—that she paired with equally slick, lustrous hair, mostly worn loose. Then there was that phase of sleek ponytails and the year she made the kohl-rimmed eyes her signature—2013. Through it all, intense eyes and nude lips remained her favourite. By the end of 2013 and in the course of 2014, the hair got bigger, and the lips got more colour. But it was in 2015 when all the elements of her look became more accentuated—those beautiful cheeks got more chiselled, the eyes more defined, the hair’s natural movement more emphasised.

Second act
Just when you thought she couldn’t raise the bar any further, 2016 had her opting for tasteful highlights for the promotions of Ki & Ka. She went on to style her newly-streaked mane in an array of textured updos, no-nonsense buns and primped curls. The consummate multi-tasker that she is, Khan remained on her feet throughout her pregnancy in the second half of 2016, whisking from brunches with her glam squad in siren red lips and mean blowouts to her professional commitments, both in India and abroad, in textured curls and a nude pout. She even clocked in miles on the red carpet, making the most of her high cheekbones with a to-die-for contour job and silky tresses framing her maternal glow.

After giving birth to Taimur Ali Khan Pataudi in late December, the 37-year-old was back at doing what she does best this year. Off-duty looks had her sporting scarlet lips and messy top knots to the airport, while her time in front of the lens was punctuated by muted pastel lippies, a flawless matte finish and a chestnut colour job highlighting her lush tresses.

Deepika Padukone epitomises classic Indian beauty. That super slender body courtesy her athletic genes and a smooth dusky glow has been the star’s constant ever since she made her big on-screen debut opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om (2007). Right after, it was established that she’s here to stay, and reign.

After her big-ticket debut, she steadily earned her stripes with a diverse repertoire of roles, including a female cab driver in Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), a visually challenged skater in Lafangey Parindey (2010) and a restoration architect in Love Aaj Kal (2009). However, the needle of her career graph truly went into hyper-drive after the release of Cocktail (2012), with her portrayal of a headstrong party girl fetching her multiple Best Actress nominations. On the opposite end of the spectrum, she gave audiences a geeky girl to love in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013) before hitting box office gold with beau Ranveer Singh in Goliyon ki Rasleela Ram-Leela (2013). The duo teamed up again for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s epic period drama, Bajirao Mastani (2015) which went on to outdo their previous records. Hollywood came calling soon, and she made her Western debut this year opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017). The leggy lass’ next release is the historic drama, Padmavati alongside Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor.

Her meteoric rise in the industry has been coupled with a comprehensive understanding of what works for her, which has in turn, produced a slew of classic beauty looks. Let’s dive in, shall we?

Golden girl
Flip through Padukone’s beauty book over the years and you’ll notice her gradual journey to minimalist makeup. Her heavily bronzed base, shimmery lids and high-shine glossy lips from 2006 until 2010 were eventually edged out in favour of a soft, smooth matte look, classic cat-eye and a nude pucker. It was really in 2014 that the star started took to bold bright lipsticks in shades of scarlet, tangerine and pop pink. 2015, meanwhile, saw Padukone pairing her vibrant pout with elegant updos, soft waves and a clean natural face.

Diva diaries
As her career kicked up pace, Padukone matched the tempo with textured ponytails, razor sharp winged liners and a mean contouring job providing that perfect pink flush. 2016 was the year that she gave her makeup artist Daniel Bauer free reign, and the actress showed up on the IIFA red carpet sporting everything from yesteryear updos to lean blowouts featuring her newly-acquired blonde highlights and bronzed cheekbones. The year also marked her big international debut, and she walked tall on the MTV EMAs 2016 red carpet with smoky eyes and a sleek ponytail to complement her studded Monisha Jaising ensemble.

When not in front of the camera, the 31-year-old religiously sticks to her winning formula of severe pulled back hair and staple red lipstick. Put her in front of the lens though, and her inner chameleon emerges, toting everything from teal smoky eyes on the Cannes carpet to mirror-shine sleek buns and a dewy glow.

Flip through the gallery above for a detailed look at her beauty evolution over the years.

Vogue tries it: Natural beauty products that are perfect for winter

$

There’s brands that have men and women in lab coats producing breakthrough innovations using advanced hi-tech scientific systems, and then there are brands going back to their humble roots with the makers lovingly handcrafting each and every product, in small batches, using only the most sweet-smelling herbaceous wonders of the earth. Lately, we’ve been inching towards the latter—trying everything from soaps and scrubs, herbal shampoos, to nourishing lip oils and face packs—and the effects of their natural ingredient list (think avocado oil, coconut milk and vetiver), has us hooked. We’re almost becoming permanent converts. Here are some that we tried, and loved.
just-herbs-silksplash-neem-orange-rehydrant-ayurvedic-face-wash
Just Herbs Silksplash Neem-Orange Rehydrant Ayurvedic Face Wash, Rs 345
You may think it’s good, but you don’t want a face wash to make your skin feel tight and a little too squeaky clean. It’s got to be gentle, and cleanse without stripping your skin off its natural oils. With skin that’s combination and has an erratic mind of its own, I found this cleanser doing exactly that. A blend of neem, sandalwood and honey, it refreshes the skin while retaining its inherent moisture. The aloe vera, honey and orange peel deeply nourish and bring out the glow, while sandalwood with its anti-inflammatory properties soothes the skin. If you’re going to cleanse your face twice a day, every day, you may as well use one that is gentle and effective, and doesn’t leave your skin taut especially in drier months.
alanna-lavender-and-mint-facial-mist
Alanna Lavender and Mint Facial Mist, Rs 250
A handy face mist is an absolute essential when you’re on-the-go and need an instant uplift. This one, with its combination of floral lavender and cooling mint makes for the perfect dose of antioxidant-rich hydration. Infusion of jojoba oil ensures nourishment.

fadlor-naturlich-exotic-herbal-infusions-shampoo
Fadlor Naturlich Exotic Herbal Infusions Shampoo, Rs 525
What became a forgotten legacy after its launch circa 1970 with castile soaps, came back when the world was truly ready to appreciate its natural, no-chemical aesthetics. My own chemically treated-hair truly needed the goodness of this shampoo with a long list of wild and exotic ingredients. Extracts of true indigo, bhringaraj, Indian gooseberry, liquorice, coconut milk and sesame oil come together to not only make my tresses smell divine, they also leave them feeling strong. My biggest take away from it was—unlike some of its modern-methodical counterparts—it didn’t feel the slightest bit harsh and softened my hair texture, taming all that winter frizz.
jhelum-loves-lip-conditioning-oil
Jhelum Loves Lip Conditioning Oil, Rs 600
Winter calls for more than just a lip balm. It calls for a deep-conditioning oil that will really repair parched, flaky lips. This lip oil is made up of vetiver and vanilla essential oils, raw honey, cocoa and orange among other moisturising ingredients, and adds lustre to your lips. Avoid sipping or eating after a few minutes of application, to let the skin absorb the oil.
neemli-aloe-vera-hemp-seed-oil-soap-wrapped
Neemli Soaps, Rs 350 approx
Made from food grade oils, these cold-pressed soaps take about 28 days to cure naturally, with its scent derived from pure essential oils—so expect therapeutic benefits too. While their charcoal soap is meant for oily, acne-prone skin, which will also help flake out dead, crumbly skin, try their aloe and hemp oil soap if you’re looking for thorough hydration. I used this, and while it’s unscented, you do get a slight bitter whiff but its dense smoothness makes for a good winter soap, especially with oils of coconut, castor and sesame in the blend. The coffee exfoliant is a great hybrid to slough skin of dead skin cells while nourishing it with avocado oil—and you’re going to appreciate its delicious cinnamon, clove and orange infused trail.
ras-luminous-skin-clearing-face-elixir
Ras Luminous Skin Clearing Face Elixir, Rs 2,350
Applying oils on acne-prone skin can be intimidating. But if it’s specifically made to tackle that concern, I wouldn’t mind giving it a go. This one helps in purifying the skin while providing deep hydration and repairs it from within to give it a healthy glow. Plus, 10 per cent of its profits going to local NGOs for growth of girl child makes it all that more appealing. Use sparingly.
skinyoga-sandalwood-saffron-face-mask
SkinYoga Sandalwood Saffron Face Mask, Rs 1,395
This three-ingredient, sandy-textured face mask is made up of powders of sandalwood, saffron and walnut seed. Make a thick paste with a few drops of water and generously spread it across your face and neck. After it dries out completely, very gently massage and remove the product with water. I found an instant freshness and brightness to my skin texture and an overall smoothness. Use it once a week before a good night’s sleep, and before massaging on a nourishing moisturiser to really let your skin take in all the nutrients. The grainy texture makes for a good exfoliant, and if you’ve got skin that reacts easily, like mine, stick to your once-a-week masking ritual.

Katrina Kaif’s stuck to classic beauty looks that have worked for her and we don’t blame her—you can’t really pick a flaw, even if you try hard enough. Making her Bollywood debut in 2003 with Boom, the British-Indian actor has come a long way and etched a permanent spot in the film industry. She then went on to make audiences adore her in Namastey London in 2007, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani in 2009 and of course, the widely-loved Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in 2011.

Later, she also played noteworthy roles in Ek Tha Tiger in 2012 and Baar Baar Dekho in 2016. We last saw her on our cinema screen in Jagga Jasoos in August. When you think of Kaif’s beauty statement over all these roles, you imagine long, lustrous locks and soft, feminine makeup that accentuates her delicate features. She has maintained and mastered this every time, on and off the red carpet. As she preps for the blockbuster sequel Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), we gave her beauty transformation over the years a closer look.

From when it all began
Looking back from 2010 until 2013, it’s evident that the star is a fan of the nudes—she’s worn every shade of the natural hue on her lips in glossy and matte textures—often pairing it with soft-rimmed eyes enhanced with multiple layers of mascara. In 2014, she started exploring brighter options and was spotted in glossy tangerine and scarlet lips. Then came her big 2015 evolution—the 34-year-old superstar went from dark brunette to bold redhead—sporting a globally-coloured burgundy mane with a soft scarlet highlight.

In recent years
In 2016, Kaif went back to black but also started to wear her hair mostly blown out or straightened, not a look we saw often previously. This year, she’s embraced her texturised waves with the signature glossy lips again and even opted for an updo on occasion. A card-carrying member of the minimalist club, her off-duty aesthetic involves her radiant dewy glow and a nude balm dousing her bee-stung pucker. However, a recent award ceremony had her breaking tradition in favour of bedhead waves and fire engine red lips.

This new dance workout will give you the best butt of your life

Dance—it really can transform the glummest of moods. It has the power to literally to cut through all the clutter in your mind and cross over to the happy side. And it can help you with your post-holiday weight loss plans as well. Perfect antidote for the millennial lifestyle. So, when I heard about this new dance form that promises to shape up your glutes with a drilling cardio-infused dance workout, I was all in. Besides, it’s just what my pre-beach vacation body needed. The dance is called Tahitian, and it involves a LOT of hip shaking.

What is Tahitian dance technique?

Hailing all the way from the Pacific Ocean, Tahitian is a dance technique that focusses heavily on your hips, and is a traditional dance from Tahiti that is performed to drum percussions. When you familiarise yourself with it, you’ll realise it’s almost like a celebratory dance—somewhere between Hawaiian and belly dancing—but way more rapid and rigorous as compared to the soft fluidity of Hawaiian moves. Basically, big, fast rhythmic hip moves that will really work your lower body—call it one of the fun ways to lose weight, if you will. And when I watched my instructor, Sanjana Mutreja, founder of Kohl Belly Dance Movement, give us a sneak peek, I knew I was in for a painfully fun evening!

The warm up session will really open up your limbs and hips to prepare for those big hip circles and rolls that will follow. You dance to layered drum beats that waver from slow to super-fast, and challenge yourself to not stop until the beat drops. You really have to give yourself wholly to this dance, and dance like no one’s watching. That’s when you enjoy it so much more, and realise your potential, and won’t want to give up. And really, that’s the best part, for most of us, who are confined and inhibited in our approach to life otherwise. Give it a shot, especially if you’re shy or would run away from something like this.
After your first session, you’ll be convinced you’re in it for the sheer love of dance—and that butt goal, of course—just like I was.

Weight loss benefits of Tahitian dancing

The Tahitian dance workout can help you get a slimmer midriff by engaging your waistline muscles and in turn burning calories that leads to weight loss. The constant swaying movement that are part of this dance form help tone your body. Tahitian dancing involves retracting your core which helps curve your hips, strengthen your stomach and also helps you lose weight by reducing belly fat. The fact that this dance form keeps your waist pulled in while dancing, also aids in developing strong core muscles. When your core muscles are strong, they give an upright and appealing posture. The constant tension on the legs helps tone them, so feel free to say goodbye to thunder thighs too.

Fun fact: You’re going to burn at least 500-700 calories with an hour of Tahitian dancing. Happy feet, ladies, or shall I say, happy hips?
Get in touch with Sanjana Mutreja to sign up for one of her Tahitian, or belly dance workshops on 9820455580.
