It’s always nice to have beautifully blow-dried hair every time you step out, and boy does it feel great to do that movie star flip knowing how fabulous it looks when you do. But with constant styling comes gradual, sometimes irreversible damage. So, keeping in mind prevention over cure, know that it’s worth investing in good quality hairstyling heat tools (along with heat protectants) that will give you salon like-hair without stripping away the strength of your locks. This is your guide to picking the tools for safe and happy at-home hairstyling, and everything you need to bear in mind before you splurge on your next flat iron.

Look for tools that have temperature control. You already have delicate hair and you don’t want to hurt it further by burning up the shaft. Keep it on the lowest setting and make it quick. Look for tools with tourmaline, a crystal that produces negative ions that trap moisture into the hair, making styling possible with less heat and moisture protection.

Rough drying is your safest bet when going for a blowout, so pick a dryer that has lower temperature settings and definitely one with a cool wind option.

Girls with curls have a lot of movement happening all the time, and the wrong tools can damage rather than enhance those locks. So after getting yourself a nourishing heat protectant, go for tools that have high temperature settings (for quicker blowouts), diffusers (to scrunch up and texturise) and are ionic (for protection and shine). Ensure you start with the low heat setting and gradually turn it up the heat to perfect the texture, without the frizz and flyaways.

Your hair needs, deserves and craves moisture. So don’t take that away by using tools that will dehydrate it further. Look for products that come with built-in sensors and detect the moisture level of your hair to adapt and work with its natural texture. Did you know that there are tools that actually infuse moisture from the atmosphere into your hair? So while you’re styling, you’re actually conditioning your strands too. Pretty neat, we think.
