With these simple but effective guidelines by Wella Professionals’ global ambassador Patrick Cameron, you’ll be on your way to the salon for your flashy new makeover:
Know your mane: According to Cameron, the first thing you need to understand and accept is—curly hair is naturally dry and that it’s important to manage expectations according to your hair type.
Why colour: Because it helps release the curls a little more, and it’s one step further to embracing those wild beautiful waves.
The colour techniques to try: With curly hair, especially dark curly hair, colour can look solid. “What’s nicer is adding a few lights into the curls, to move the hair colour one or two shades lighter in perhaps one or two areas,” explains Cameron. He also suggests going for the ‘painting hair’ technique, as it adds freedom to the hair and gives a beautiful mixture of tones to the curls.
How to choose your colour: Consulting your hairdresser is the first step, but Cameron suggests being careful with your skin tone: “Don’t go too light or too bright if you have darker skin. Add beautiful richness with shades like mahoganies or reds and if you want to go lighter, go up to two to three shades lighter than your original hair colour.”
Post-colour care: Treatments—curly hair needs treatments. Smoothening masks, a suitable shampoo and deep conditioning rituals once a week are a must.
